The Lynden Pioneer Museum is a museum maintaining a collection of daily life and transportation history for Whatcom County. Located on the corner of Front and 3rd streets in Lynden, its three-story 28,000 squre foot facilities encompass a wide range of programs. The museum maintains four large galleries of exhibits that include a life-size pioneer farmstead of the late 1800s, typical of the northwest, with kitchen, parlor, barn, and bedroom; a block of historic Lynden with 26 shops and storefronts portraying Whatcom County rural life at the turn of the century; the Polinder buggy exhibit, with 52 horse drawn vehicles, the largest collection of its kind west of the Mississippi; and the auto gallery, which displays an annual exhibit on the effect of automobiles on Whatcom County communities.
The museum runs two regular elementary education programs. The pioneer workshop gives kids a hands-on experience of pioneer life. The settlement to town workshop lets kids explore the path of community development as they settle the northwest and form a town using government, economic, social and infrastructure development.
The museum offers two regular presentation series. Past Alive! brings historic figures to the museum in small one man shows for audiences to interact with. A Day in the Life takes this one step further by bringing together 30 historic characters and reenacting a local historic event.
The Lynden Pioneer Museum is always exploring new ways to understand and utilize the tool of history. This unique, local treasure deserves your support.
