For the past 75 years, The Mount Baker Theatre has been a home for the performing arts. The 1,509 seat theatre opened in 1927 and audiences continue to marvel at the distinctive Spanish-Moorish architecture. Unique features, such as the 110-foot tower, grand Wurlitzer pipe organ, 80-foot dome, and 600-pound bronze and glass chandelier have been in place since its inception and enhance the theatre experience. The Theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1978. Its historic grandeur also inspired the successful citizen-led effort to save it from demolition in the 1980s. As a result, the Mount Baker Theatre Committee, formed in 1983, purchased the building on April 1, 1984, with assistance from the community and the City of Bellingham.
Once a venue for early films and vaudeville performances, the Theatre now regularly welcomes Broadway hits, musicals, live music, dance, drama, and special films to its stage. The Theatre serves as a home for community groups and hosts numerous special events throughout the year.
To better serve the community, the theatre offers an Education Program as a community service for Whatcom and Skagit County public, private, and home schools. This exceptional program enriches the school curriculums by providing students with the cultural experience that comes from professional live performances.
Your support ensures that the theatre can continue to offer the finest in high quality programming, provide the resources for the Education Program, and maintain the historic facility as a true Whatcom County architectural and cultural treasure.
