The Meridian Public School Foundation
214 North Commercial Street
Bellingham, Washington 98226

Paul Kratzig, Board President

The Meridian Public School Foundation was formed in August 1997, to receive gifts and donations from individuals, families, and corporations who want to invest in our future leadership, through the school district.

While the MPSF operates independently from the District, it exists solely to benefit the students, staff, and faculty of Meridain Public Schools, by providing scholarships for Meridian graduates, support for faculty and staff excellence awards, and educational programs at all grade levels that are not currently funded by tax dollars.

The board oversees application procedures, solicits donations, applies for matching grants, and manages all other business of the MPSF. A 15-member board of trustees, including two ex officio members representing the school district, governs the MPSF. The rest of the board consists of other professionals and citizens of Whatcom County who represent a broad spectrum of community members.

Over the last five years MPSF has funded 92 recipients and made gifts totaling $100,000. MPSF offers a number of annual scholarships to college-bound graduates and is building three new endowment funds: The Anvil Corporation Athletic Challenge Endowment, The Sanderson Family Endowment, and the Ed Nelson Endowment.

Although much of the original funding for the MPSF was unsolicited, and came through the generosity of alumni, their families, and a few estate gifts, MPSF recognizes the need to be proactive in seeking funding for more scholarships. The community served by the Meridian School District is largely agricultural and rural residential, with little corporate support for education, and where fewer individual taxpayers must provide for a larger geographic area, making educational funding difficult to sustain. MPSF recognizes the increasing financial challenge of providing quality education, for K through 12 students, and for students who want to continue after high school.

By helping to provide assistance through MPSF, private donors, alumni, and local businesses can help to insure a prosperous and successful future for all. Scholarships are awarded by MPSF to students planning to attend technical, vocational colleges, or community colleges, as well as those seeking four year degrees.

MPSF's endowment comes primarily from alumni. Recently, several families have initiated estate planning with the MPSF. This will help to ensure future funding for endowments, scholarships, and other educational programs that will assist the district.

If you believe in excellence in public education, and that good students should have chances to further their education, please consider making a gift to Meridian Public School Foundation.
