The Power of Hope empowers youth to live positive, engaged lives by discovering their own sense of purpose and creative potential through high-energy, experiential, arts-centered programs. Using a unique intergenerational learning model that brings together a multicultural community of youth and adults, Power of Hope offers summer and school-year youth programs in the Pacific Northwest. Power of Hope also works to develop the capacity of the youth worker field by offering training programs for adults who work with youth.
The Power of Hope was founded in 1996 out of the belief that young people are an untapped resource for community renewal and social change. Living in a time of rapid cultural change, young people are exposed to levels of personal and societal stress unknown even a generation ago. Schools lack the capacity to deal with an increasingly multicultural population, and families are working harder than ever to simply survive. The Power of Hope programs provide intensive opportunities for youth, ages 14 to 18 - many of whom are labeled as "at-risk" youth-to learn from and create meaningful relationships with adult social change activists, artists and nature educators. Using the arts, Power of Hope programs allow youth to discover their own creativity and sense of purpose, develop their leadership skills, and build stronger communities. In acknowledging the creative potential of our youth rather than treating them as "problems" to be solved, facilitators have witnessed over and over again remarkable transformations of youth from positions of hopelessness, anger and self-destruction to positions of leadership, hope and empowerment. Programs for youth include intensive week long summer gatherings, weekend retreats during the school year and after-school arts, performance and leadership groups. Power of Hope also offers workshops on experiential arts based programming for adults who work with youth. This innovative, purposeful organization deserves support.
