The Jazz Project is a jazz service organization dedicated to increasing performance opportunities for jazz musicians, and advancing the appreciation and development of jazz in the Pacific Northwest. Founded by Jud Sherwood in February 1997, The Project promotes community development and fosters an awareness of and appreciation for jazz by making America's original art form accessible to those of all ages and backgrounds.
Funded by public and private grants and donations, budget and attendance figures have increased eight-fold since the 1999 season. The Project produces two concert series--a four-part Feature Series, and an eleven-part Art of Jazz series--and hosts many free performances including a Club Series, Seaside Concert Series, and concerts by the Bellingham Youth Jazz Band (BYJB). The Project presented 90 events in 2002 to more than 7700 patrons. The Project admits all children to shows for free, provides tuition assistance and lesson subsidies, and assists uninsured and underinsured jazz musicians with emergency medical and rehabilitation expenses. The BYJB provides middle school students the opportunity to learn America's original art form from the masters.
The Project was born in a once nearly invisible, but dedicated jazz culture in Bellingham. Many players are still here teaching and performing. The Project preserves and invigorates that culture, guiding it into all walks of life by providing Whatcom County a window on the world of jazz, and forging lasting community connections between artists and patrons, government and corporate grantors, students and educators. Music is a pervasive and indispensable element of social life, a medium through which individuals can realize greatness in themselves and others. While the Jazz Project keeps Bellingham tuned to what's out there on the jazz front, it sees to it that one of those fronts is right here in Whatcom County.
