Whatcom Community College exists to provide life-long learning opportunities for area adults, regardless of their educational background, through diversified programs responsive to community and individual needs. The WCC Foundation, an adjunct to the college, was chartered by the State of Washington in 1987. Legally, the foundation is a not-for-profit corporation separate from the college. Philosophically, it is not separate: its work is entirely designed to support college goals in ways not possible with state funds.
This year WCCF is providing almost 60 scholarships to recent graduates of area high schools, to vocational students, to WCC graduates transferring to four-year colleges, to male and female athlete/scholars, and to special category students. An Assistance Program provides loans and grants to needy international students. Foundation funds will augment the professional development opportunities available to faculty and enable the library to expand its collection. Monetary awards will be given to outstanding graduates, faculty, and staff selected by students and college employees.
The foundation is also able to act as a "pass-through" for grant funds to worthy programs such as Turning Point which annually assists more than 70 displaced homemakers in creating productive lives.
In fiscal year 2002, Whatcom Community College Foundation raised $200,000, paid out $113,170 for programs and scholarships, and increased endowments by $58,000. Management and general fund-raising cost $13,019. The college contributes a portion of one person's time to foundation operations and provides office space and supplies. Please support this worthy endeavor.
