The Whatcom Film Association is the offspring of a group of local film lovers and a community eager for independent, foreign, documentary and special interest film. After opening the award-winning Pickford Cinema in downtown Bellingham in 1998, membership in the WFA grew quickly: a mere four years later the WFA boasts over 1,300 members. In 2002, a supporter of the WFA acquired a building for use by the Pickford Cinema. This fired the first shot for the most exciting period in the WFA's short life: a capital campaign will begin in 2003 to completely remodel this historic building into a two-screen theatre and film center. With this new and greatly improved theatre space, the WFA will remain an integral partner in the burgeoning downtown renaissance.

The WFA is dedicated to expanding the Pickford's programming for audiences of all ages, establishing itself as a resource for educators and filmmakers, and bringing the finest films heretofore available only in larger cities. Established film festivals, such as the Projections Film Festival for local and regional filmmakers, and the Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival, also signify the WFA's important role in local art and culture.

The WFA has also started a new Bellingham tradition: The Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema. Recently celebrating a five-year anniversary, this nostalgic and magical movie going experience draws crowds frequently numbering over a thousand to enjoy a film and the stars in historic Fairhaven.

The WFA and the Pickford Cinema constitute an exciting component in Bellingham's evolution as one of the country's "Best Places to Live" by providing entertainment in the downtown area and as an important venue for this century's greatest art form: film. At the cusp of great change, this organization will blossom from your conscientious support.
