The Whatcom Museum provides leadership in the fields of history and art in the Pacific Northwest. Through preservation, exhibitions, collections, and educational programs the Museum enhances the quality of life for our community.

Founded in 1941 and incorporated in 1981, the Whatcom Museum of History and Art is one of the leading cultural destinations in Bellingham. Its four-building campus consists of the 1892 City Hall, Syre Education Center, Arco Exhibition Gallery, and Whatcom Children's Museum. Museum staff includes 33 full-time and part-time employees, plus over 450 volunteers.

An accredited museum, the Whatcom Museum follows strict guidelines as set forth by the American Association of Museums. Its conservation policies and practices have been commended by the AAM and modeled by other national museums, and members of its staff have received numerous professional awards including the Mayor's Arts Award and the Washington Museum Association Publication Excellence Award. The Museum recently commemorated its 60th Anniversary by unveiling the WMHA 2001-2005 Long Range Plan.

Among the highlights of the Museum's permanent collection are the internationally renowned, vintage Darius Kinsey Photo Collection, and artwork by masters of the Pacific Northwest.

The Museum offers free access to exceptional art and history programming. In 2002, we garnered the Washington Museum Association Award for Exhibit Excellence. The Museum presents over 800 exhibition-related programs annually. Public programs include artist talks, guest lectures, puppet shows, art workshops, and Bellingham Bay history cruises. Educational programs include curriculum-based art and local history presentations, both on-site and in the classroom.

WMHA's wide variety of programming and quality of service rely upon contributions. The Museum's grant program includes past awards through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Kresge Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Washington State Arts and Humanities Commissions. Please support this local treasure with your generous donation.
