The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra has been an important part of Whatcom County' s culture for almost 30 years. From its humble beginnings, the WSO has grown significantly with the help of the community. The orchestra presents a series of six-concerts each season at the historic Mount Baker Theatre, with special guest concerts in other community locations. Enriching Whatcom County from both the inside and out, many concerts showcase local musicians alongside nationally (and internationally) renowned artists.
Orchestra members range from 18 to 80, and include local music teachers, active and retired professional musicians, and community members from all backgrounds. The WSO also features a chamber orchestra, which was formed to fill the void for a permanent, local chamber orchestra. Overall, the WSO provides a performance venue for over 85 local musicians and plays an integral part of the cultural life of Whatcom County.
As the resident orchestra of the Mount Baker Theatre, the WSO's classical concerts draw an audience averaging 1,230, and the annual holiday and pops concerts both sell out with audiences of 1,500; yet tickets sales alone are not enough to keep the music playing.
In addition to concerts, the WSO is dedicated to bringing music to our children. Aside from the annual free children's concert, an Outreach Program has recently been developed in order to bring live classical music to schools in Whatcom County. This program will surely ignite a passion for music in students and will further nurture the growing cultural life of our community.
So give the gift of music to Whatcom County with your donation to the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and keep the tradition of symphonic music alive for generations to come.
