Giving in Washington State
How many of us give?
Compared to the other Northwest states and national averages, Washington state ranks low in the rate of participation in charitable giving. According to IRS statistics for 2000, Washington's highest income group (those reporting incomes over $200,000) ranked 45th out of 50 states in percentage of taxpayers who itemized charitable deductions. These statistics were the original impetus for starting the Catalog for Philanthropy in Washington State. There is a great opportunity to bring these numbers up, simply by illuminating the full range of philanthropic options available today, and the substantial advantages of "tax-wise" giving. The Catalog project will track these statistics over time to evaluate the success of programs that, like the Catalog, are promoting philanthropy to enhance the quality of life for all our citizens.
