RE Sources, an environmental education and advocacy organization, gives the public the information and tools necessary to effectively become involved on behalf of the environment. RE Sources began the curbside recycling program in Bellingham. Whatcom County was the first in Washington to offer countywide curbside recycling. RE Sources provides classroom recycling education to more than 10,000 school children each year.
RE Sources also operates the RE Store, conserving natural resources by collecting and selling used building materials. Following the success in Bellingham, a Seattle store opened. Together, the stores save almost 2 million pounds of construction materials from the dump each year!
RE Sources created the Whatcom Watersheds Pledge and Neighborhood Stewards programs to help residents make lifestyle changes to reduce impacts on water quality. The Pledge received a special recognition award from Governor Locke, and now communities throughout the county are replicating this model program.
RE Sources launched the North Sound BayKeeper program in 1999. The North Sound BayKeeper serves as the eyes and ears of the ecosystem, working to protect marine waters stretching from the Skagit River to the Canadian border. In addition to patrolling area waterways, the BayKeeper comments on pollution discharge permits, participates in decision-making processes affecting marine waters, operates a volunteer kayak patrol and shoreline monitoring effort, and conducts citizen action training on aspects of environmental policy. Your generous donation will go directly to the North Sound BayKeeper program.
