Family farms, independent local businesses, community newspapers, local artists and craftspeople, entire eco-systems, and the unique character of many towns are disappearing. The only people who can ensure the vitality of community are those who live here. Sustainable Connections is a membership network of Northwest Washington local businesses, farms, and citizens. Sustainable Connections started when a local engineer and a local builder came together with a commitment to build infrastructure (homes, parking lots, etc.), as if people, and water, and trees mattered. From these early steps, this network has grown to include much wider participation: local restaurants are working with local farmers to help retain the viability of agriculture in the County; local bookstores and artists are creating a celebratory book that will educate people about the importance of their individual choices and offer them discounts to try member businesses; community newspapers and an independent film association are using their medium to profile sustainable business behavior; a local computer and office supply business has formed a purchasing club to reduce the costs of environmentally friendly supplies, and the list goes on. Sustainable Connections members make pledges to benefit their employees, their community, their local economy, and their environment. SC helps them connect their actions to their values by introducing the expertise of one member to the goals of another. Great communities don't remain great without conscious choices.
