Our home is a region of unparalleled natural beauty, blessed with spectacular mountains, swift-running rivers and streams, ancient forests, quiet beaches, and fertile farmland. These features make Whatcom County a popular place. This popularity comes with a price. An exploding population and rapid growth are causing these treasured landscapes to disappear at an alarming rate.
Founded in 1984, Whatcom Land Trust is a local, grassroots organization that assists private landowners who want to protect their land. The Land Trust promotes stewardship and conservation awareness through a variety of outreach activities, and through publications like the award-winning book Whatcom Places.
Conservation projects range from simple donations of undeveloped family lands to complex public-private partnerships for the protection of wildlife habitat, scenic vistas, and public parks. The Trust negotiates land trades, purchases, donations, and perpetual conservation covenants with private landowners.
The Land Trust has protected over 6,500 acres of land, including four miles of salmon habitat along the Nooksack River. Cooperative efforts include the creation of the 2,300 acre Canyon Lake Community Forest with Whatcom County and Western Washington University. In summer 2002, the Land Trust worked with the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County to protect 369 acres in the Lake Whatcom watershed.
Donations from individuals and businesses, foundation and state grants, and bequests of land, cash, and stocks provide the funding base that is devoted to land acquisition and conservation activities. Volunteers assist in many ways, ranging from monitoring properties to providing pro bono legal advice, which allows the Trust to keep administrative overhead low.
WLT recognizes the urgency in safeguarding even more property so that future generations may experience the beauty of Whatcom County, and invites you to invest in this crucial conservation effort.
