Arthritis is the number one form of disability in America, affecting one in three people. Arthritis affects the joints and connective tissues causing chronic pain and loss of movement. Arthritis is not an old person's disease; it is a devastating disease that affects over 70 million men, women and children in this country.
The Arthritis Foundation is the only national voluntary health agency seeking the causes, cures, preventions and treatments for the more than 100 forms of arthritis.
The Arthritis Foundation offers a wide variety of programs and services that enable people to take control of their disease: water & land based exercise programs to encourage and improve mobility, self-help courses to help individuals learn to manage their disease, and professional and public education forums to ensure that our community is up to date on the latest in research, treatment, and prevention techniques available. The Arthritis Foundation in Bellingham answers a toll-free telephone line for all of Washington and Alaska. Anyone can call to receive information about arthritis, physician and program referrals and answers to general questions about the disease.
The Arthritis Foundation is totally funded by donations and money raised through annual fundraising activities. The second Saturday in December is the annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis in downtown Bellingham. May brings the Arthritis Walk and September brings the Resort Semiahmoo Arthritis Foundation Charity Golf Classic.
This organization exists to help people take control of their disease and lead active, healthy lives. Its dream is that with the help of the community, and the support of generous donors, it will one day be possible to say that we not only know what causes arthritis, but we know how to prevent and cure it.
