The mission of the Whatcom County American Red Cross is to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Because of Whatcom County's strategic location on the border, and with an international airport and waterways, emergency preparedness is vital. Last year, there was a 162 percent increase in requests for disaster services over the previous year. Local Red Cross volunteers responded to help 74 families, providing 449 people with food, clothing, shelter, medicine and hope after disasters such as home fires, windstorms, flooding and hazardous material spills. As a premier provider of life-saving courses in first aid, CPR, AED, babysitting, aquatics and more, Red Cross trained nearly 6,000 local people.
Armed Forces Emergency Services and International Social Services center on emergency communications between family members in times of personal emergencies, or in cases of war, civil unrest, or natural disasters. In a volatile world, your local Red Cross is positioning itself to meet the increased need for 24-hour, worldwide emergency communications.
Red Cross also recruits and trains an active volunteer force and helps to build community and youth leaders. Last year, 531 local people of all ages served Whatcom County through Red Cross. Upcoming plans include a pilot partnership between Red Cross, the Mt. Baker School District, the VISTA volunteer program, and community business partners to launch a School Safety Initiative (SSI.) SSI will educate young people in disaster and emergency response and violence prevention and give them the knowledge, skill, and practice to save lives and to protect themselves and their families. The five-year goal is to expand this program countywide.
For more than 85 years, your Whatcom County Red Cross has stepped up to meet the changing needs of this community. All local American Red Cross services are made possible thanks to the generous contributions of community members.
