Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission is to improve the quality of life for children in our community by building supportive one-to-one relationships between children and positive role models. Recently, the organization was recognized by the Bellingham School Foundation as the Outstanding Community Organization in 2002.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has a number of mentoring programs to match every lifestyle. Underlying all of these programs is the simple belief that each of us has had someone who brought a little magic into our lives … seeing a shooting star for the first time or a first trip to the ballpark.

The Core Program matches community volunteers with children aged 6 to 14 in a one-to-one relationship. Campus Buddies matches college students with elementary school children meeting for 6 to 12 hours per month and was awarded the Service Organization of the Year at Western Washington. Family Night is a nine-week program offering a comprehensive evening of service to children and their families including parent education, one-to-one mentoring, and facilitated challenge course activities.

School Buddies matches volunteers with elementary school students during the academic year in a venue that supports one on one interaction. Sites include Bellingham, Lynden, Nooksack Valley, Anacortes and Burlington School Districts.

For much of the agency's history, programs were funded through bingo revenue. With a drop in bingo's popularity, the agency closed the bingo hall in 2002. In response they merged with other agencies to improve operational efficiencies and have developed a direct mail campaign. The agency still needs to develop additional funding sources to prevent any reduction in services.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has a program that changes lives - the lives of children, the lives of the volunteers and the quality of life for the entire community. Your support can help create more life changing magic.
