People often ask, "What does Brigid Collins do?"
BC's mission is to break the cycle of child abuse in Whatcom Count. Explaining how they work to accomplish this is difficult because their services are as diverse as the families they serve.
"Adrianna" called Brigid Collins and told an on-call case manager she was worried she wasn't a good parent. After they talked, Adrianna was matched with "Laura," a case manager. They arranged times to meet both at Brigid Collins and at Adrianna's home. Adrianna had two obvious strengths: her commitment to her two children and her ability to make good parenting choices. Her challenges included too little income, the stress of single parenting, and a lack of confidence in her parenting.
Once Laura established trust with Adrianna, she encouraged her to join Brigid Collins' weekly Parents Helping Parents meetings for support from other mothers, and to enroll in a computer class that resulted in a raise at her job. Adrianna took parenting classes to reassure her about her skills. While Adrianna's life is not perfect, she is more capable of handling her challenges today, and her kids have a stronger, healthier home environment.
Adrianna is just one from over 1,100 others helped by Brigid Collins each year. Each family faces unique problems ranging from substance abuse issues, to physical, mental or sexual abuse of their children, to language and cultural barriers, to an inability to provide for a child's basic needs. The people at Brigid Collins work to help families of all kinds provide a nurturing, safe, and supportive home for their children.
All Brigid Collins services are free. BC is able to provide them because of the generosity of people like you. Children like Adrianna's are the future of our community. What does Brigid Collins do? It insures a brighter tomorrow for children and each and every one of us with an investment in Whatcom County.
