The Brain Injury Association of Washington was founded in 1982 by a group of concerned family members of traumatic brain injury survivors to provide support, education, advocacy and prevention related to traumatic brain injury. BIAWA is also a founding affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America. BIAWA's mission is to create a better future through brain injury prevention, support, education, and advocacy.
BIAWA provides resources and informational materials to survivors of brain injury, their families and the professionals who serve them. These resources are as diverse as help finding an SSI attorney, to where to turn when you are in need of housing, or what to expect when you bring a loved one home who has suffered a traumatic brain injury. BIAWA's network of 29 support groups statewide offer a forum for discussion of issues and coping skills for brain injury survivors and their families. BIAWA's prevention efforts include the free distribution of bicycle, snowboard, and ski helmets to children across Washington State. Every year, BIAWA, provides helmets and professional fittings for hundreds of school aged children, substantially reducing the risk of future injuries.
BIAWA has been successful in making brain injury survivors and family members aware that they are not alone in their struggle to cope with the varied impairments and disabilities that constitute brain injury.
Over the next twelve months, one of BIAWA's major goals is the creation of a public awareness campaign aimed at reducing incidences of brain injury caused by mental, sexual and physical abuse of children. Please help BIAWA continue to create a better future.
