The historic Young Women's Christian Association, YWCA, stands like a majestic sentinel, a symbol of the strength and dignity it imparts to those who seek shelter here. Since 1907, the Bellingham YWCA has dedicated itself to peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all - a commitment that has taken shape in the provision of safe, affordable housing for single women in need.
Today, The Larrabee Residence Program continues to provide emergency and transitional housing and services for homeless women. Nine emergency beds provide short-term shelter at no charge and give the most desperate a rest from the daily struggle so that they might seek more long-term solutions to homelessness. Twenty-seven transitional beds (maximum length of stay 18 months) are available for women to live safely and work toward independence. All residents share a kitchen, bathroom and the knowledge that they are not alone.
The YWCA's service to women includes a array of programs such as domestic violence education, free hygiene supplies, stipends for education, and referrals to other agencies for physical and mental health needs. The Back To Work Boutique provides professional attire at no charge for low-income women in the community. Over three hundred women received clothing and consultation in the past year.
Knowing it is imperative to preserve the only free and low-cost transitional housing for single women, the YWCA embarked on a capital campaign to modernize this historic landmark, bringing it up to today's standards of safety and accessibility. The goal has nearly been reached, and a tour of this lovely, efficient facility is a testament to dollars well spent.
The YWCA continually strives to maintain its excellent service reputation and needs your help in caring for the women of Whatcom County for the next 100 years and beyond.
