Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County was founded in 1987 as a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The stated mission of HFH International is to remove poverty housing from the face of the earth, making it socially, politically, and religiously unacceptable. As a local affiliate HFHWC carries this mission to the working poor of Whatcom County, and has built 13 simple, decent homes since its inception.
HFHWC strives to provide opportunities for homeownership to those who would not qualify for a traditional mortgage; it partners with families making between 25 and 50 percent of the county median income and offers them a house at cost with a 20-year, interest-free mortgage. Mortgage payments are paid directly to Habitat, which then recycles the money by investing it in the construction of new homes for the next recipients. In exchange, recipient families participate in educational programs and contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" on their home. Habitat for Humanity is a hand up, not a hand out.
As an institution HFHWC is only just beginning to reach its potential. Thirteen homes have been built in fifteen years, six of which have been done in the past three years. Three homes are planned in 2003 and HFHWC looks forward to activity only increasing from there. HFHWC's most difficult area lies in land acquisition, as very little affordable land is available in Whatcom County, especially in Bellingham.
Habitat for Humanity uniquely offers volunteers and donors tangible results for their time and money. Each home built represents the work of hundreds of hands and thousands of hours, all of which lead to a turning point in the life of a family that would never have experienced the stability of homeownership without the participation of Habitat for Humanity and its partners.
