Legal Assistance by Whatcom (LAW) Advocates provides legal assistance and access to justice for Whatcom County residents who are unable to afford them.

Founded in 1987, LAW Advocates strives to successfully resolve legal problems through effective, dedicated representation. Its greatest success stories are the people they help: an illiterate man talked into deeding away his home; a family who had their water cut off due to the landlord's unpaid bill; or a young mother abused by her husband who fears for her life and the safety of her children.

Other services include Street Law, where lawyers set up shop on a downtown street corner during the summer and dispense legal advice. The program is designed to reach low-income street people and street kids who need legal advice and referrals. The Will Program helps seniors over the age of 60 and people who are terminally ill or disabled. Project SAFER (Stop Abuse and Fear by Exercising Rights) offers a family law attorney who provides advice/case assessment and legal representation for victims of domestic violence.

LAWS' latest project for which they seek funding, entitled Pro Bono Holistic Advocacy, combines the talents and expertise of human service providers and volunteer attorneys working together. Attorney volunteers will analyze the client's legal problem, identify and implement the appropriate legal advocacy strategy and work with caseworkers to mobilize resources to meet the client's other needs.

The homeless, the abused, the disabled, the elderly, and many other disadvantaged people turn to LAW Advocates for counsel and representation with diverse and often complex legal problems. LAW Advocates matches low-income residents with local attorneys who donate their services to our program. Only lawyers can provide legal services. There is no other resource. You can help.
