In 1989 a small group of women dedicated themselves to finding a solution for the problem faced by homeless women and their children. With little money, but hearts full of passion, they opened Lydia Place - a six-month transitional housing program.
Lydia Place serves women and their children by offering safe shelter, individual and group parenting support, case management, and a life skills program that assists families moving from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Lydia Place serves up to eight families at a time in the six month on-site program. Each woman meets with the case manager to set goals for herself. These goals become the basis for the changes she wants to make for her future. In addition, she participates in the Life Skills program focusing on budgeting and finance, communication skills, health and safety and other issues that contribute to homelessness. After "graduating" from the program, each family is offered continued support and case management for a year in our Follow-up Program.
The children of Lydia Place have their own program designed to address the fears that are the result of the violence and homelessness they have experienced. The six components of this program are - communication, coping skills, trust building, safety, healthy families, and self empowerment. Each child also meets individually with a trained volunteer weekly to expand on these program pieces through play, games, or reading. This individual attention is essential to building self-esteem and confidence.
Since adding the Follow-up Program in 1999, Lydia Place has assisted thirty-two families in finding permanent housing; twenty-nine of those families have maintained their housing and are well on their way to self-sufficiency. Making permanent change is the goal of Lydia Place. Please help these women and children with a generous gift.
