In every corner of our community, you will find people whose lives have been touched in some way by the Opportunity Council, a local Community Action Agency working to help low-income people in Whatcom, Island, and San Juan counties achieve self-sufficiency.
Since 1965, the Opportunity Council has been creating positive change both in the community and in the lives of the people it serves. Through innovative partnerships, the OC works to find solutions for community needs and challenges:
Dorothy Place, completed in 1998, provides 21 apartments to shelter homeless women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. OC organized support from private foundations, religious communities, nonprofit organizations, service clubs, business, government and individuals to create this affordable and supportive housing. Dorothy Place residents find alternatives to physical and verbal abuse through meetings, modeling and community-building activities.
Community Voice Mail provides homeless and phoneless people with 24-hour voice mail. By putting clients back in touch with employers, landlords and service providers, Community Voice Mail has helped over 90 percent of participants in Whatcom and Island counties achieve self-sufficiency goals.
Maple Alley Inn serves hot, nutritious meals to people who are hungry and in need. Every week, over 25 volunteers work with a program coordinator to serve home-cooked meals in a safe and respectful atmosphere. The OC's Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve low-income families with children ages birth to five at Head Start or Early Head Start sites throughout Whatcom County, working to assure that all children are ready to learn when they begin elementary school.
Other Opportunity Council programs help keep families warm through the winter, give school supplies to homeless children, match families with child care and training, and provide information and referral for a broad range of basic human services.
Supporting umbrella organizations such as this one is strategic giving - enlightened, farsighted, cost-effective - but rarely done by individual givers. Bring opportunity and a second chance to those who need it most by supporting this crucially important charity.
