Sisu Children's Fund was founded and incorporated November 1999. "Sisu" is a Finnish word which means to show courage and fortitude in the face of adversity. It is our desire to give children and young adults dealing with medical and physical problems a "little sisu" to help them overcome obstacles.
The purpose of this nonprofit public charitable fund is to provide funding for medical treatment or equipment not covered by insurance for children dealing with medical or physical disabilities. Families may apply by writing a letter describing their needs.
Many young adults dealing with disabilities have a difficult time proving their ability to employers and others. For this reason the Fund provides a full scholarship each year for Bellingham Technical College, and a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior going on for further education. To date the Fund has provided five scholarships to students who have been very successful in their education.
The Fund has purchased a laptop computer with a professional voice activation program for a young woman dealing with lupus. She has multiple problems, has endured the loss of fingers and a limb, and is unable to work, but her computer allows her to keep in touch with her family and friends even when she is in the hospital for treatment.
The Fund also sponsors scholarships at the Northwest Therapeutic Riding Center in Whatcom County, and presently has one child on scholarship.
All officers and members of the board are volunteers and receive no salary, keeping operating expenses to a minimum so donations and income can benefit children. Please help and give a "little sisu."
