Sean Humphrey died of AIDS in 1992. Sean Humphrey House was built in 1995. It is one of only three facilities in the State of Washington providing housing, meals, medical services, and counseling to a rapidly expanding population. The new face of AIDS is below the poverty level, male and female, young and old, often pharmaceutical and alcohol addicted, and sometimes affected with both Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS. Designed to help those dying of AIDS, the house today provides a home where affected persons learn to live again.
2001 and 2002 were years of daunting challenges for the house! Fortunately, all challenges were affirmatively met, resulting in entirely new staff, the receipt of a grant retiring the mortgage on the building, and retirement of a $89,000 deficit. Sound financial management, focused, creative fund-raising, and strict control of expenses provided solutions. Effective January 2003, the debt-free facility will embark on a remodeling project, making needed upgrades to the facility. An energized board of directors, creative staff ,and enthusiastic volunteers all look eagerly forward to delivery of more efficient service to the residents, as well as the non-resident HIV community who routinely join in for counseling, group support, dinners, field trips, and entertainment, making Sean's house their home.
