Imagine what life would be like if you could not read. You could not navigate by road signs, order off a menu, fill out job applications or read to your children. This is the harsh reality for one in five Americans. The Whatcom Literacy Council is here to change this reality for all who seek help.
With the influx of technology in the workplace, welfare reform, and awareness of the effects of parental illiteracy on children, more and more adults are seeking help.
Founded in 1978, the Whatcom Literacy Council combats illiteracy by teaching adults to read and write, or to use English as a second language. By providing free, individualized and confidential tutoring in the student's community, according to the student's schedule, WLC removes the barriers of shame, lack of transportation, poverty, and past failures.
Each student receives a free assessment and customized learning plan and is matched with an appropriate tutor. Students are tutored for a minimum of one year. Through tutoring, individuals are able to find or advance in employment, read to their children (stopping the cycle of illiteracy), write a check, read a prescription, leave an abusive relationship, get a GED, enroll in higher education, and achieve many other important accomplishments. Through literacy, our students become committed, contributing community members.
WLC serves approximately 400 students per year and the waiting list is large and growing. Your generous donation will be used to recruit, screen, train, and support volunteer tutors; provide free learner assessment and learning intervention services; and purchase books and materials to meet this growing demand. Illiteracy can be stopped. This is your chance to make a difference.
