24 hour Domestic Violence Helpline: 360-671-8539

Womencare's mission is to provide emergency shelter, a 24 hr domestic violence helpline, and support services for victims of domestic violence; and promote a community response to domestic violence through outreach and education.

Womencare is a private, non-profit organization established in 1979 as a volunteer-based program dedicated to ending domestic violence. Since then Womencare has offered the only confidential, emergency shelter and support services to victims and their children in Whatcom County, and in that time has provided a safe haven to over 7,000 victims of domestic violence.

Womencare also provides Whatcom County's only local Domestic Violence Helpline staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2001 trained advocates answered 1601 calls for help. Callers receive phone support or a personal, confidential meeting where they examine the tactics and dynamics of domestic violence, problem solve, explore their options, and safety plan.

At the shelter residents receive clothing, food, personal care items, crisis intervention, support groups, legal advocacy, referrals to community resources, domestic violence education, advocacy-based counseling, help with safety planning, and medical, financial and housing referrals. Child advocates work with the children on a daily basis using art therapy and play groups.

As a community leader in domestic violence education, Womencare offers trainings and presentations to individuals, middle and high schools, colleges, local businesses, other service providers, and the medical community. In 2001, through outreach and community education, Womencare provided information on domestic violence and where to go for help to 5,184 individuals.

A former resident said," Staying at Womencare gave me time to reflect on my situation and prepare for my next step. I really appreciated the sincerity and love the advocates showed to me and my children." Please support this safe haven for victims of abuse.
